One of the three bushfires during our 2-day stay in Kakadu
National Park (not a specaculair picture though, as we weren't allowed near
the centre of the fire). However several square kilometers of bush went
up in flames, mainly due to controlled fires. Firemen often dilebaretely
set fire to the woods before the dry season starts, so they can controll
the fire. This way the fire will only burn slowly so most animals are able
to escape, and large trees will survive. Once the dry season begins, the
chance of having another (uncontrollable) fire is rather low, as there aren't
much small plants left to fuel the fire. |
