Australia day 1: Sydney

Erik went to his dental congress, and I went out to discover the city. One of the first things I noticed was how clean the city is. Just to compare, it’s cleaner than Hasselt, which is known as the cleanest Belgian city. You have to search quite hard to find cans or other garbage on the roads. Quite astonishing for a city with about 5,5 million inhabitants.

Although there’s not much police visible in the streets, it seems quite a safe city. I don’t have a problem walking around on my own anywhere. I probably will have to review my opinion on this when I get mobbed Thursday- or Friday night, but still, as for now: quite safe.

As said before, I just went out to see a bit of the city. I first went to the residential area to walk around a bit, to find myself ending up at a fish market. Of course I had plenty of opportunities to test my new camera, as you can see.

It appears the signs with crocodiles and kangaroos are just for tourists. These are the real ones: trucks and snails (I know, Australian snails look kinda funny).

Every scholar has to wear a uniform, I guess even in kindergarten...

Great bush animal ice cream!

Njammie... gelato at Circular Quay

Our hotel was guarded by the marines.

I went to a couple of shopping malls, most of them are quite beautiful by the way. At the malls I also noticed that liquor is almost twice as expensive as in Belgium. No Bailey’s tonight ?

Sydney has quite a lot of nice shopping malls.

The same shopping mall after electricity went out everywhere. I wonder why these things always happen when I'm around...

No, I really didn't set the place on fire!

After a short meeting with Erik during his dinner-break, I activated my newly acquired Australian phone number. You can call me now at 00.61.408.27.97.04. If you call, please bear in mind the time difference of +9 hours between Sydney and Brussels, so I’d prefer if you call before 3pm Belgian time.

In the evening I met Erik again. Unfortunately, we didn’t have the time to get to a Wireless Lan-spot (this is a place were you can hook up to the internet through your laptop), of which there are only a few in Sydney. We had to get to our gala dinner near Sydney Opera House. It might seem quite amazing, but I actually enjoyed myself between a herd of dentists. To close the evening, we drank a Baileys in one of the bars at the harbour.

Being at the hotel again, I’m writing my first report on the trip. Guess I’m going to get some sleep now. It’s only 2:30 am but I want to get up early, and Erik is already sleeping. So I guess it’s g’dnite for now, and c y’all tomorrow!
